Murray Ward of Quinte West
Brighton lays on the boundary of Northumberland County and Quinte West as a result it shares many services such as the Chamber of Commerce with businesses in the western part of Quinte West
The eastern vanguard of Apple Route Country, the Murray
Ward is well-known to lovers of the water, antiques
and crafts. North of Highway 401, amidst the rolling
hills around Wooler, are the most unique and unusual
craft and antique stores, as well as pet and birding
suppliers.
Murray is also
a place to
find great
golf courses
and trout fishing
in either creek
or lake. Along
the Weller's
Bay shore are
campgrounds,
marinas and
beaches, and
you'll find
sports fishermen
by the score,
drawn to the
bay for its
renowned fishing.
There are also
charter fishing
boat rentals
and lots of
local fishing
derbies which
could net you
a prize.
The Murray
Canal connects
Presqu'ile
Bay to the
Bay of Quinte,
gateway to
the Trent Waterway
and the inland
route to the
Thousand Islands.
South of the
swing bridge
at Carrying
Place is the
Kente Portage,
the route used
by Joliette,
Champlain,
LaSalle and
scores of missionaries,
traders and
settlers to
cross the 1-1/2
miles between
the Bay of
Quinte and
Weller's Bay.
A cairn marks
the spot of
the gunshot
treaty signed
in 1787 by
the British
with the Natives
in the area.
Many old homes
& buildings
can still be
seen along
the Kente Portage,
the oldest
road in continuous
use in Ontario.
